I have a problem with stuff. I can't get rid of it. Clutter you could call it. When the mail comes, I immediately retrieve the "important" stuff (bills) and the occasional real correspondence, and toss the obvious junk. I still end up with a mountain of mail/paper/junk, that can't just be thrown away or recycled until it is inspected. So it sits around, until I have nothing better to do. (I always have "better" things to do but today, clutter guilt finally got to me).
Each piece must be examined. Does this bit of "stuff" contain secret information that needs to be shredded into a zillion tiny pieces? Or can it just be tossed directly into the recycle bin? After a couple hours of sifting, I ended up with two huge piles, one to toss, one to shred. Now, when am I supposed to sit and shred that pile of cr@p? I have better things to do. Which brings me to the important "stuff".
If you like stuff, you probably like to collect. I have no clutter guilt when it comes to collecting stuff, because the "stuff" I collect has some intrinsic or artistic value (in my mind). Take this beautiful ceramic vase I discovered on my last antique mall outing:
It goes nicely with my collection of small ceramic vases.
I started this collection 12 years ago, when we had our baby boy. My mom first gave me this vase, which she received when my brother was born (some 46 years ago).
She also sent me flowers in this vase to celebrate the birth of Emmet.
On my antiquing expeditions, I started to notice more of these quirky little vases, many with a juvenile theme. Evidently, florists have always used these for arrangements to send to new moms and babies. My newest one is quite old. This is what it looks like from the back. You can see the crazing on the glaze.
I really like the pieces with animals, but have recently become enamored with the cute little people I find in the really old vases, like my new one, and these.
Is that little skirt too cute, or what?! And guess what I did while downloading photos for this post? I shredded that MFing pile of paper! Hey, at least I'm good at multitasking.
